Ambassador: The Guzzler Ultra 2022

Elaine ‘Laney’ Mills

A little bit about me
I’m just a regular mum of 4 sons who loves running everywhere; roads, beaches, and especially trails!

Running is not only a hobby, it has become a part of who I am, a part of my family, and a part of my life. Running’s given me so many new amazing friendships with other like-minded people who inspire and support each other, and are as crazy about the trails as I am!
which three words best describe you?
  • Passionate
  • Determined
  • Kind
“I’ve found that running – particularly in nature[…]– has a way of restoring the spirit”
My running history
I’ve been running for 5 years, and been on the trails for only the last 3 years.

I had a ridiculous dream for a runcation to do the Rome marathon and someone said oh the cobblestone roads will get you if you’re not used to it, so I took up the trails to “harden up” – so to speak.
Why I run
Running has definitely given me confidence; not only by improving health (I have Essential HBP and have to take tablets daily) my well-being but also as a mother to four sons. I hope that by participating in the 100km I’m showing all my boys that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to if you work hard, learn from your mistakes, and keep bettering yourself each day. I hope that I can also inspire other women of colour to come join me on the trails as there are only a few of us out there.

We all have our own stories that make us who we are, but I’ve found that running – particularly in nature and those long long distances (no matter how long they take you) – has a way of restoring the spirit, embracing you with a new found energy that flows to those around you if you let.

100km will do that to you. GOOD VIBES. ❤

I’m coached by peak endurance coaching, love RMA and what they stand for. I try to organise long run weekends with other mums on the trails when we can to keep motivated and because long runs with others make it fun, the chats, exploring getting lost; it’s all part of the training!

Where are your favourite trails?
My faves are my local Chermside Hills Reserve, Mt. Coot-Tha, and more recently Bracalba and Moreton Island National Park.
The trails ahead

The Guzzler Glass Half Full (50km) was the first ultra I signed up to but I had to pull out 3 weeks before with a foot injury. I ended up as a part of the volley crew and got to see the legend, Reesha Lewis, take out her first win that year. Yeah the Gals! I’m back for those good vibes 🙌

Will this be your first 100km Ultra?

No. But it’s my first Guzzler 100km.

What part of race day are you looking forward to?

The vibes! Seeing all us nutter trail community together in all their glorious colour!

What part of the race day do you think presents the biggest challenge or fear?

My biggest challenge like everyone else who is not an elite fast athlete will be the mental game. Especially when you start to feel the hurt from being out there longer. I’m going to just keep moving forward, stay in my own race, take it one checkpoint at a time, remember to have fun and you will end up exactly where you’re meant to be.

“remember to have fun and you will end up exactly where you’re meant to be”
Where will you be training?
Everywhere! On the Guzzler course, Bracalba, Chermside Hils, Springbrook, Mapleton, Moreton Island. It’s good to mix it up, make it fun with variety.
Any advice or something you’d like to share with your fellow Guzzlers?
This will be my first guzzler 100km too so if you’re tossing up about doing it come join us!

Train on lots of hills, run, hike, walk because you will be doing it all come race day.
